David Pickburn Award

David’s involvement in community theatre was a lifelong passion, spanning over 30 years of both performing and directing. For much of that time, he was an integral part of the Latrobe Theatre Company (formerly the Latrobe Light Opera Society), where he served as an actor, director, and administrator. His influence on the company was immense—David played a key role in its growth and success, leaving a lasting legacy that continues to flourish today.

From 2001 to 2008, David also made significant contributions to the Warragul Theatre Company, both as an actor and director. His efforts helped elevate the company to the high standard it maintains to this day. David’s final on-stage role was in 2002, when he portrayed Professor Henry Higgins in My Fair Lady, a performance that earned him a GAT award for Best Leading Actor. Yet, it’s his unforgettable portrayal of the Major General in Pirates of Penzance that remains one of his most cherished roles.

Professionally, David was a dedicated teacher and principal, passionate about fostering academic, social, and personal growth in young people. Alongside his wife, Jan Pickburn, and dear friends Mandie Black and David Williams, David co-founded Class Act Productions in 2001. Through Class Act Productions, David directed numerous productions, including Scrooge, Guys and Dolls Jr., The Music Man Jr., Fiddler on the Roof Jr., Macbeth – A Rock Opera, Honk Jr., and Pirates of Penzance Jr., all of which helped nurture young talent and create opportunities for aspiring performers.

In 2008, after the loss of David, Class Act Productions established the David Pickburn Award to honour his memory. The award recognises a junior cast member who demonstrates an exceptional contribution to the company and shows outstanding personal growth— a fitting tribute to the man whose passion and dedication continue to inspire all those involved in the company.
